About this event

“Sustainability” has become a central word in our daily vocabularies. Most people know what it means to act “green” or “sustainably” or where our society should go in the future to live up to this challenge. Some may have even heard about the three pillars of sustainability (economy, society and environment). Still, many of us have adopted a rather narrow technocratic interpretation of the concept. Sustainability to many is about getting the technology (in the broadest sense) right; with policy makers seen in the role of making sure the right technology is spread out and adopted by citizens as fast as possible. In this workshop we will provide a more holistic and broader perspective of what becoming a sustainable society implies considering key challenges that need to be addressed. We need to be able to see our limits and develop visions and narratives (also called imaginaries) about how to flourish within them to bring about a transition that is both inclusive and appropriate.

Main Takeaways

What kind of sustainable society would we like to live in and what is the role of innovation and technology to get us there? The goal of the workshop is NOT to provide answers to these questions but to enhance our understanding of what they actually imply and how we can associate them to specific contexts. We want to jointly broaden our “imaginaries” about the necessary socio-ecological transformation of our society.
